This client was founded to bring the first generation of household robot assistants to life, and to market. Integrating prowess from world-leading Taiwanese manufacturers with Silicon Valley AI genius, they are breaking ground in general-purpose consumer robotics with capability in unstructured “human” spaces. The CTO, an expert in AI and machine learning, led the DARPA effort that spun out the Watson AI project.

As a well-capitalized start-up, we have demonstrated our prototype robot at CES 2018, and have additional key members and breakthrough technological approaches to ensure success in this challenging field.

Job Description

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Software Engineering will be a member of the clients’ senior leadership team. You will be shepherding the day-to-day activities of the entire software organization (currently 75+ developers), technically guiding development of our products and robotics platform. You will be accountable for outputs & execution of entire software team.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a software team on development of robotic software for home users and vertical markets
  • Manage and drive line leaders at a technical level to deliver product, on budget and on time
  • Drive software organization to deliver production quality software and documentation
  • To define and manage the software development process for the group of 90+ developers
  • Proactively propose and execute detailed changes in the planning, resource allocation, and execution of the entire software team for better productivity
  • Take ownership for the deliverables across the SW team
  • Understand the planning and execution of each of these deliverables at a depth that allows them to ensure delivery, and to fix plans / execution that are not going to lead to delivery
  • Accountable for outputs & execution of entire software team

You will be leading a worldwide team of top coders and technical experts, with an initial focus on household tidying, and people care applications, including advances in:

  • Visual modeling and perception
  • Language understanding at a distance
  • Navigation in dynamic, unstructured “human” spaces
  • Flexible robotic manipulation
  • Reliable, effective behavior in the real world

Required Experience:

  • Prior Experience managing software project of size of 50+
  • 6+ years of experience of managing delivery of software products
  • Good management experience in large scale software projects with agile development process
  • Familiarity with software development tools and be able to secure confidential data with tools and process
  • Experience in tuning up team performance
  • Experience with ROS, AI, and/or robot related development a plus
