Chief Research Scientist
Chief Research Scientist
About the Organization
A leading industrial research center in Europe is home to a large-scale Advanced Computing Systems Laboratory, recognized for its contributions to next-generation computing technologies. The lab conducts cutting-edge research across chip architecture, large-scale computing systems, interconnects, memory subsystems, artificial intelligence, and full-stack software frameworks.
With a multidisciplinary team of dozens of senior researchers—many holding doctoral degrees—the lab operates at the forefront of computational innovation. It offers a collaborative and research-driven environment that encourages long-term scientific impact, technical excellence, and the translation of foundational research into real-world systems.
The laboratory maintains strong collaborations with international academic institutions and industry partners, enabling ambitious, well-funded research programs and large-scale exploratory projects. Its work spans hardware–software co-design and AI-driven systems, with a strong emphasis on publishing in top-tier conferences and journals, as well as generating high-value intellectual property.
By advancing the foundations of modern computing, the lab plays a key role in shaping future technologies for data-intensive and AI-driven workloads.
Position Overview
The Advanced Computing Systems Laboratory is seeking a Chief Research Scientist to provide strategic scientific leadership and technical direction across its research portfolio.
This role is intended for a highly accomplished scientist with deep expertise in advanced computing architectures and a proven ability to guide path-finding research. The successful candidate will define long-term technical vision, identify disruptive research directions, and lead a diverse team of senior researchers in exploring next-generation computing systems.
A strong emphasis is placed on efficiency, scalability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness for emerging AI and data-intensive workloads.
Key Responsibilities
-
Strategic Architecture Leadership
Define and guide the evolution of next-generation computing architectures, including AI accelerators and general-purpose processors. Continuously monitor global technology trends, anticipate disruptive developments, and translate insights into forward-looking research agendas. -
Research Direction & Problem Definition
Identify and prioritize critical challenges in future computing system design based on their potential impact on competitiveness, performance, and scalability. Establish ambitious research goals and oversee the delivery of top-tier technical outcomes. -
Architecture Design & Performance Analysis Capability Building
Lead the development of advanced capabilities in architecture design, modeling, and performance evaluation. Promote the use of rapid workload modeling, architectural simulation, and design-space exploration tools. Support complementary technologies such as programming models, compiler frameworks, and heuristic optimization methods. -
Exploration of Differentiated Technical Paths
Encourage exploration of novel architectural approaches that go beyond established industry and academic solutions. Integrate research insights, best practices, and real-world requirements to ensure proposed architectures excel in efficiency, adaptability, and scalability—particularly for AI-centric workloads. -
Technical Representation & Influence
Act as the primary technical spokesperson for the research team. Present and defend architectural concepts at internal reviews, external technical forums, industry conferences, and academic seminars. Influence broader system design directions through close collaboration with internal R&D stakeholders. -
Academic and Industry Collaboration
Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with universities, research institutions, and industry collaborators at both local and global levels. Represent the organization within the scientific community and contribute to building a strong international research reputation. -
Research Excellence & Output
Ensure consistent production of high-impact research outcomes, including influential publications, breakthrough technologies, and valuable patents. Foster a culture of rigorous scientific inquiry and innovation aligned with emerging technology trends.
Required Qualifications
-
PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a strong research focus on advanced computing architectures and systems, particularly for AI-driven scenarios.
-
More than 15 years of research and development experience in computing architecture, spanning academia and/or industry, including significant leadership responsibility.
-
Demonstrated expertise in AI-related computing domains such as large-scale models, foundation models, multimodal systems, or adjacent high-performance computing areas.
-
Strong publication record in top-tier journals and conferences and/or a portfolio of high-value patents (e.g., h-index ? 30 or equivalent impact).
-
Proven ability to lead, mentor, and inspire senior researchers and multidisciplinary teams.
-
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience in microarchitecture, system-on-chip (SoC) design, hardware platforms, and advanced memory systems.
-
Strong background in workload characterization, mapping, and software–hardware co-design.
-
Knowledge of semiconductor design and manufacturing considerations, including process technologies, packaging, and system integration.
