Electrical Design Engineer
Electrical Design Engineer
Location: Cork
Overview
An established automation and engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join its Controls Engineering team. The company specialises in developing bespoke automated machinery and integrated production solutions for high-tech manufacturing environments. This role offers exposure to complex, cutting-edge engineering projects and the opportunity to contribute to the design and delivery of advanced automation systems used in regulated industries.
Role Summary
Reporting to the Controls Engineering Manager, the Electrical Design Engineer will work on the full lifecycle of electrical design for custom automated equipment. This includes concept development, detailed design, commissioning, and supporting the successful delivery of projects within scope, budget, and timeline. The role involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams and offers significant technical variety.
Key Responsibilities

Develop new electrical design concepts for automated machinery and production systems.

Interpret and evaluate technical specifications and project requirements.

Select suitable electrical components and materials aligned with performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Ensure compliance with relevant electrical and safety standards, implementing appropriate protective and risk-mitigating measures.

Collaborate with mechanical, software, and project teams to deliver fully integrated automation solutions.

Perform electrical testing, troubleshooting, and verification to ensure system performance and functionality.

Execute equipment qualification activities, power-up checks, commissioning tasks, and system validation.

Provide technical input to estimation, procurement, and project support teams.
-
Participate in project meetings and contribute progress updates and technical insights.

Keep abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practice in electrical and automation design.
Qualifications & Experience
-
Third-level qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Electrical Apprenticeship, or related discipline.

3–5 years’ experience in electrical design or relevant industrial engineering environment.
-
Proficiency with CAD tools such as AutoCAD or EPLAN.
-
Understanding of automated machinery design, component specification, and integration.
-
Knowledge of robotics, motion control, machine vision, or pneumatics is an advantage.

Ability to produce clear, accurate technical documentation.

Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a cross-functional engineering team.

Good understanding of electrical safety standards and compliance requirements.

Strong troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving capability.

Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
