Munich is the capital of Bavaria and was ranked by Monocole in 2010 as the world’s most livable city. It is one of the largest cities in Germany, having a population of about 1.35 million people. Much of the city’s historical buildings have been preserved and rebuilt, giving it some of Europe’s most stunning architecture. That, combined with Munich’s wonderful art scene, good beer, great parks, and high quality of life make it consistently one of the most desirable cities to live in in Germany. It is also home to FC Bayern, Germany’s most successful club!
Munich has a continental climate, and is greatly affected by the nearby Alps. Summers are warm, with an average maximum of 23°C, and winters can be quite cold. The city is very easy to get around; there is a one ticket system called MVV which means you can use the tram, buses, S-Bahn and U-Bahn all on the same ticket. If you are a cyclist, Munich has over 200km of bike trails and bike lanes, and plenty of parks for walking, Englischer Garten being the most famous. Motorways from Munich connect it directly to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Berlin, Salzburg and Innsbruck.
Munich is perhaps most famous for it’s annual Oktoberfest (which actually takes place in September) during which huge tents are set up filled with musicians and crowds drinking beer out of massive 1 litre beer mugs. However there is so much more to their culture than this – Munich is actually an art and cultural centre with many great museums, galleries to rival Berlin.
Be sure to try the pretzels; Weisswurst, a breakfast sausage with grainy mustard; and Leberkäse, a white roll filled with a mixture of veal, pork, lemon zest, spices, and mustard. If you get sick of Bavarian food, have no fear – Munich is a large and multicultural city, and has any kind of food you could want. There are also fresh markets around the city where you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, breads and so on.
