Women in Cybersecurity: Swetha Kondur’s Journey to Success in Tech

Discover how Swetha Kondur built a successful career in cybersecurity. Her story offers inspiration and advice for women in cybersecurity and tech roles.

Why We Share Stories of Women in Tech

At European Tech Recruit, we believe in celebrating the stories that often go unheard—especially those of women building powerful careers in the tech industry. Our Women in Tech series is about more than highlighting professional achievements; it’s about creating visibility, sharing real-world experiences, and reminding women everywhere that yes, there is a place for you in tech.

By sharing stories of real professionals who’ve carved out careers in complex, male-dominated sectors like cybersecurity, we aim to empower others to follow in their footsteps. These role models show that it’s not only possible to thrive in tech – it’s necessary. Their insights, experiences, and advice are opening the door for the next generation.

Meet Swetha Kondur: Security Certification Engineer, Paris

In this edition, we feature Swetha Kondur, who was placed by Jet dela Cruz into a Security Certification Engineer role at a world-leading tech company in Paris. Swetha’s story is a compelling example of what’s possible for women in cybersecurity today. Here’s her journey in her own words.

What mattered most to you when exploring new opportunities in cybersecurity?

“Growth and impact have always driven me. I look for roles where I can contribute to meaningful projects – especially in cybersecurity and certification – and keep evolving. Culture matters a lot too; I thrive in environments where knowledge sharing is encouraged and everyone’s input is valued, regardless of seniority.”

What inspired your journey into tech, and how did you get to where you are today?

“My entry point into tech was a deep interest in how systems communicate – networks, protocols, and security mechanisms. Over time, I became fascinated by the intersection of technology and regulation, which led me to specialise in security certifications like Common Criteria. Navigating this field required continuous learning, getting comfortable with legal frameworks, and developing strong communication skills to bridge technical and compliance worlds.”

What part of your work truly energises you?

“Helping product teams navigate complex regulations and seeing their ‘aha’ moments when things click. I love translating abstract legal or security requirements into concrete, actionable steps that make their product stronger and mainly communication, knowing that because of me, there was an achievement for the company.”

What challenges have you faced in your tech career – and how did you overcome them?

“Early on, it was self-doubt – especially in rooms where I was the only woman. Over time, I learned to back myself with preparation and build strong networks. The more I owned my space, the more impact I could have. Being a woman in a technical and compliance-heavy space also comes with its challenges, but I’ve learned to trust my expertise and speak up even when it feels uncomfortable.”

Which skills have been most critical in your cybersecurity career?

“Critical thinking, communication, and cross-functional collaboration have been essential. I’m constantly working on storytelling – explaining complex topics clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.”

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in cybersecurity or tech?

“Don’t wait to be an expert before diving in. Tech is broad, and there’s space for all kinds of skill sets – analytical, regulatory, creative. Build your network early, and don’t be afraid to claim your space, especially in meetings or discussions where you bring unique value and women are needed as much as men.”

What needs to change in tech to create more inclusive spaces for women?

“It starts with leadership accountability – diversity can’t just be an HR slogan. Inclusive hiring, mentorship programs, and addressing subtle bias in everyday interactions are key. Also, let’s normalise different leadership styles – not everyone needs to be the loudest in the room.”

How did European Tech Recruit support your job transition?

“Jet Dela Cruz came looking for me when I didn’t even know I needed to be looked at, and honestly because of him, I am now on a new path in my life. He helped me understand my unique value in the market and guided me through the process with empathy and constant communication. Honestly, I love it when people communicate and follow up like he did. I have never had someone do that before with me. I appreciate the help he has provided in securing the job in a big firm.”

Have you had any female mentors or role models in tech?

“Yes, one in particular showed me what it meant to lead with empathy without compromising technical depth. She made me realise I didn’t need to ‘fit in’ – I could stand out. She was my first manager who taught me what it is to be a woman working in cybersecurity.”

Have you ever felt pressure to prove yourself as a woman in cybersecurity?

“Absolutely. I was the only woman in the team during my second job, it was a bit challenging but I handled it by being meticulously prepared, letting my results speak, and gradually learning that I didn’t need to overcompensate to be taken seriously. In the end I was one of the favourite employees to everyone around me and had one of the best male-dominating teams anyone could ask for with a very supportive manager as well.”

What does success look like for you today?

“Success means being a trusted expert who helps shape secure, compliant technologies – and supporting others along the way. It’s about having both influence and integrity in the work I do.”

What would you tell your younger self starting out in tech?

“Don’t underestimate yourself. Because that is something I have always done.”

Swetha’s story is a powerful reminder that success in tech isn’t about fitting a mold – it’s about showing up, speaking up, and continuing to grow. Her impact in cybersecurity and compliance reflects what happens when technical skill, personal resilience, and inclusive leadership come together. We’re proud to support professionals like her as they shape a more secure and inclusive tech future.
