About the job

ERL are supporting a leading System integrator that is looking for an experienced Automation Project Engineer to provide an onsite project support service to our client in Athlone, Co. Westmeath. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and influence key control systems projects for our client from design to commissioning.

This is an office hours position, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm with a requirement to work some longer hours and weekends as the job demands.

As a contract, the position offers excellent rates and the opportunity for a long-term placement.
 

Roles and Responsibilities
 

  • Adherence to GXP procedures on site in relation to all aspects of the position.
  • Management and execution of automation change controls
  • Aide the identification/implementation of system improvements and corrective actions.
  • Aide the coaching of operators and maintenance technicians in the effective use of the control systems.
  • Manage the specification, development, installation, and validation of automation projects with direct responsibility for control systems.
  • Lead discussion with project teams, provide technical support and make informed decisions on hardware and architecture selection. .
  • Working with OEM teams to design, develop and test PLC code in accordance with site coding standards.
  • Work closely with OEM/Project team to fine tune PLC code during testing & development phase of projects. Conducting system testing and troubleshooting to identify and resolve any issues or bugs.
  • Responsible for completing controls aspects of projects within the schedule and budget.
  • Assess existing technologies and processes. Research and implementation of new control technologies.
  • Co-ordinate and manage controls elements of build and debug of equipment.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure projects are delivered on time and to required quality standards.
  • Management of subcontractors and vendors as part of project delivery.
  • Represent client as part of qualification and testing of any vendor provided systems.

Skills and Education
 

  • Third level qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Systems Engineering, Computer Science or Equivalent.
  • 5+ years’ experience working with automated control systems preferably in the Life Sciences/ Pharma sector
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of Allen Bradley control systems including RSLogix/Studio 5000 and FactoryTalk View ME/SE.
  • Familiarity with Siemens PLC platforms (e.g., TIA Portal, WinCC) is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming languages such as ladder logic, function block diagram (FBD), and structured text (ST).
  • Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, Profibus, Modbus) and networking concepts.
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems (e.g. Ignition, FactoryTalk).
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and techniques for securing SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, GMP, GAMP) related to automation and control systems in the Life Science industry.
  • Knowledge of GAMP software development lifecycle, ANSI/ISA-S88 and S95 industry standards and 21 CFR Part 11
