Powering a Greener Future: Connecting Talent with Sustainable Battery Tech
In this article:
The world’s push toward cleaner energy sources has put battery technology centre stage. Electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems, and a host of electronics now rely on batteries, making them a cornerstone of a more sustainable future.
According to a forecast from Gartner, Inc., by the close of 2025, 85 million EVs are projected to be in use globally, 73% of which will be Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). The number of BEVs is expected to rise by 35% from 2024, totaling almost 62 million units by the end of 2025. With EV adoption continuing to increase, there is an urgent need to address what happens to these batteries when they reach the end of their service life.
The Challenge of Battery Waste
Managing end-of-life (EoL) batteries is a complex challenge. Discarded batteries contain valuable materials that, when recovered, can be reused, reducing the need for fresh extraction. Despite these opportunities, current recycling practices are still lagging. According to the American Chemical Society, only about 5% of lithium-ion cells are recycled worldwide. This is a serious concern if we hope to avoid running out of critical materials like lithium and to prevent mountains of discarded batteries.
On a more positive note, the Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) indicates that approximately 95% of a lithium-ion battery can be recycled to produce new batteries. In fact, recycled metals command prices that are beginning to compete with metal from mining operations. This makes recycling not just an environmental choice but also an economically viable strategy as demand for these metals remains strong. The challenge now is scaling this effort, fostering cooperation between governments, manufacturers, and consumers to establish integrated and efficient recycling systems.
Our Commitment to Sustainable Talent Solutions
