In our Big Moves series, we interview tech experts who have recently made an international move for their work. We talk about their motivations, the benefits and challenges of moving abroad, and share their insights and tips.
European Recruitment operates globally focusing on niche tech industries, allowing us to hire globally and help people relocate if necessary to work for leading tech companies. In this feature, we speak to Oriol Solé Font, one of Adam Chapman’s candidates who recently relocated from Spain to Ireland for an Automation Engineer role at a multinational pharmaceutical company through us.
How did the opportunity for you to move abroad for your career begin?
Since I was a child, I always knew very clearly that I wanted to live abroad. As I got older, that thought grew stronger, and it was clear to me that I didn’t want to miss out on the opportunity to enrich myself culturally, learn languages, meet new people and work in a completely different professional environment. However, it wasn’t until this opportunity presented itself to me that I really said to myself “either now or never”. I was also lucky that my girlfriend had always wanted to live abroad and she insisted that we should do it.
What were the main factors that motivated you to accept the role and relocate?
The opportunity to work in a large pharmaceutical company, the experience of living abroad, the opportunity to improve my English and meet new people.
What have been the biggest challenges in relocating?
The hardest part was being away from family, friends and knowing that I would be away from home. Also, when we arrived in Ireland it was very difficult to find an apartment to live in, and the first weeks were exhausting, since hotels were very expensive and it seemed more and more difficult for us to find somewhere.
What advice would you give someone looking to make a move abroad?
Do it, don’t think about it. There will never be the ideal time to do it, that doesn’t exist. I know it’s scary at first, leaving your stability in your home country, moving away from family, friends, but when you’ve done it, believe me you don’t regret it.
How did your consultant and company help you with the move?
They encouraged me at all times to take the leap. I had many doubts about it, but they were always there to clarify them for me and they were very patient with me. On the other hand, when we had trouble finding an apartment, they went out of their way to help me find one. Thanks Sally Chapman and Adam Chapman!
