Energy Management System Engineer – BESS Applications
You will be joining a world-leading technology company at their R&D site in Nuremberg.
Responsibilities
- Drive innovation in next-generation stationary energy storage and energy management systems, focusing on integration with trading platforms for electricity market participation.
- Contribute to the design of advanced cloud and edge-based EMS architectures for renewable power plants, particularly PV and BESS combinations.
- Define technical and application-specific requirements for stationary BESS across European market segments, including district/micro-grids, C&I, and utility-scale installations.
- Develop and implement advanced EMS algorithms for both front-of-the-meter and behind-the-meter energy storage operations.
- Design, simulate, and validate control strategies to optimize battery performance under varying market conditions (e.g., energy arbitrage, FCR, aFRR).
- Integrate battery, BMS, and power conversion system models into EMS frameworks to enhance performance and profitability.
- Collaborate with hardware, communication, and control teams to ensure seamless integration across system components.
- Support the development of optimization and forecasting models using linear, nonlinear, or AI-driven approaches.
- Contribute to the design and validation of EMS prototypes using HIL/CHIL testing environments.
- Analyze operational and market data to continuously improve EMS logic and performance.
- Build strong partnerships with European universities and research institutions to foster long-term collaboration.
- Work closely with R&D and product teams at headquarters to align technical strategies.
Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Control Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Proficient in Python; experience with C++ or Java preferred.
- Skilled in Linux environments and power system simulation tools (e.g., DigSILENT, Modelica).
- Background in EMS or SCADA development, with expertise in control systems, optimization, and forecasting.
- Solid understanding of BESS architecture, components, and grid code requirements.
- Familiarity with European electricity markets and flexibility services is an advantage.
- Experience with embedded systems, CHIL/HIL testing, and EMS prototyping preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership in technical project management.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work in cross-cultural teams.
- Fluent in English; Chinese or other European languages are a plus.
- Willingness to travel across Europe and internationally.
