We’re currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Project Design Engineer to join an innovative engineering team delivering next-generation automated manufacturing technology. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the design, development and validation of advanced automation equipment, working on cutting-edge projects from concept through to prototype and implementation.

This position is ideal for an experienced mechanical or automation design engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, developing innovative equipment and working across multidisciplinary project teams.

The Role

As a Senior Project Design Engineer, you’ll take ownership of the design and development of bespoke automated manufacturing equipment, supporting new technology development and continuous innovation. Working closely with internal engineering teams, equipment suppliers and project stakeholders, you’ll help transform concepts into fully engineered solutions while ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Design innovative automated manufacturing equipment and mechanical systems for new technology development projects.
• Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and 2D manufacturing drawings.
• Develop engineering concepts and evaluate multiple design solutions to meet project objectives.
• Design and develop proof-of-principle and prototype equipment to validate new manufacturing concepts.
• Apply sound engineering principles to optimise performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost.
• Perform engineering calculations and utilise FEA tools where appropriate to validate and improve designs.
• Work closely with automation, electrical, controls and manufacturing engineers throughout the equipment development lifecycle.
• Manage design reviews and incorporate stakeholder feedback into design iterations.
• Support equipment build, assembly, testing and commissioning activities where required.
• Collaborate with external machine builders, equipment suppliers and technology partners throughout project execution.
• Identify opportunities to introduce new technologies and innovative manufacturing solutions that improve efficiency and capability.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives across equipment design and manufacturing processes.

What We’re Looking For

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Automation Engineering or a related discipline.
• Significant experience designing bespoke automated manufacturing equipment or special-purpose machinery.
• Strong 3D CAD experience (SolidWorks, Creo, Siemens NX, Inventor or similar).
• Experience designing complex mechanical assemblies, mechanisms and automation systems.
• Knowledge of FEA and engineering analysis techniques.
• Experience developing prototypes and proof-of-concept equipment.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and design for manufacture principles.
• Experience working with machine builders, system integrators and external suppliers.
• Proven ability to manage engineering projects from concept through delivery.
• Excellent communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work within cross-functional engineering teams in a fast-paced project environment.
