System Performance Architect
System Performance Architect
Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced System Performance Architect to lead the design and optimisation of next-generation operating system performance across hardware, software and chipset layers.
The role focuses on system scheduling, kernel-level optimisation, application performance and hardware-software co-design. You will be responsible for developing architecture and optimisation strategies that balance performance, power efficiency and thermal constraints, and for driving these solutions through to deployment on end devices.
A key part of the role is translating advanced systems research and emerging industry developments into practical technical roadmaps and measurable product improvements.
Key Responsibilities
System Scheduling and Hardware-Software Co-Optimisation
- Design and develop integrated scheduling mechanisms across CPU, GPU, memory and system resources.
- Optimise areas such as priority management, task grouping, core selection and frequency scaling.
- Develop kernel and hardware co-optimisation mechanisms to improve overall system efficiency.
- Design scheduling strategies that balance performance, power consumption and thermal constraints.
- Drive solutions from architecture and prototyping through to implementation on end devices.
Operating System Performance Optimisation
- Analyse and optimise application performance at the operating system level.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in core system modules.
- Improve application responsiveness, interaction latency, animation smoothness and overall user experience.
- Design and optimise high-performance operating system components and runtime mechanisms.
High-Performance Application Frameworks
- Research high-performance APIs, runtime technologies and application development paradigms used in modern operating systems.
- Design frameworks and system capabilities that enable developers to build high-performance applications more efficiently.
- Explore runtime optimisation and performance-oriented application architecture.
- Improve the interaction between application frameworks and underlying system resources.
Technology Strategy and Roadmapping
- Track developments in operating systems, system scheduling, hardware-aware optimisation and related academic research.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and determine their relevance to future system architecture.
- Translate research and industry developments into technical roadmaps and platform evolution strategies.
- Identify opportunities for architectural improvements across hardware, kernel, runtime and application layers.
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong hands-on experience in one or more of the following:
- Operating system performance optimisation
- System scheduling
- Kernel development
- Hardware-software co-design
- System architecture
- Practical experience with technologies such as:
- CPU/GPU scheduling
- Memory and bandwidth management
- Priority management
- Task grouping
- Core selection
- Dynamic frequency scaling
- Strong understanding of performance, power and thermal-aware system design.
- Deep understanding of operating system-level application performance and performance debugging.
- Ability to identify and resolve bottlenecks in complex system software.
- Familiarity with high-performance APIs, runtimes, application frameworks and performance-oriented software design.
- Strong engineering execution skills, with the ability to take technical solutions from initial design through implementation and deployment.
- Ability to demonstrate measurable improvements in system and application performance.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with research, engineering, product and international teams.
- Based in Amsterdam or willing to relocate.
Preferred Experience
- Experience developing or optimising operating system kernels, schedulers or runtime systems.
- Strong knowledge of heterogeneous compute architectures.
- Experience with mobile, embedded or other resource-constrained operating systems.
- Familiarity with performance profiling, tracing, benchmarking and system-level debugging tools.
- Experience translating academic research into practical system architecture or production solutions.
- Strong understanding of interactions between application workloads, operating systems and underlying hardware.
