Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced System Middleware Architect to lead the architecture and evolution of a next-generation operating system middleware platform.

The role focuses on designing a unified middleware architecture that can support multiple application ecosystems while delivering strong compatibility, scalability, stability and performance across different device categories.

You will define the technical roadmap for the middleware layer, solve complex system-level challenges, establish engineering standards and help shape future operating system technologies over a two-to-three-year horizon.

Key Responsibilities

Middleware Architecture and Technical Strategy

• Define the overall architecture and technical roadmap for the operating system middleware layer.
• Lead the long-term evolution of middleware architecture while balancing technical debt, platform requirements and product priorities.
• Identify architectural risks, dependencies and opportunities for simplification or consolidation.
• Drive key technical decisions across system frameworks and middleware components.

Cross-Platform and Multi-Ecosystem Support

• Design a unified middleware architecture capable of supporting multiple application ecosystems.
• Ensure strong cross-platform compatibility, scalability and performance.
• Develop architectural approaches that provide consistent behaviour across different device types and usage scenarios.
• Support middleware deployment across devices such as smartphones, PCs and other connected platforms.

Performance, Stability and Scalability

• Identify and resolve critical middleware-level performance and stability issues.
• Optimise areas including:
  • Memory management
  • Application and service startup performance
  • Compatibility
  • Runtime efficiency
  • Scalability
• Improve system responsiveness and reliability across complex application workloads.
• Lead technical investigations into difficult system-level issues and performance bottlenecks.

Engineering Standards and Quality

• Define development standards, architecture principles and technical specifications for middleware systems.
• Establish automated testing, validation and quality-assurance mechanisms.
• Improve architectural consistency, maintainability and engineering quality across middleware components.
• Introduce processes that support reliable technical evolution and large-scale platform development.

Technology Research and Roadmapping

• Track developments in operating system and middleware architecture.
• Evaluate emerging industry technologies and academic research.
• Identify technologies that could influence future platform architecture.
• Translate research and technology trends into practical technical roadmaps and incubation projects.

Required Skills and Experience

• Strong experience with at least one major operating system platform such as:
  • Android
  • iOS
  • Fuchsia
  • ChromeOS
  • Other modern mobile, desktop or embedded operating systems
• Strong understanding of operating system software architecture, frameworks and system-level application development.
• Deep knowledge of operating system implementation principles.
• Academic or professional background in:
  • Computer Science
  • Software Engineering
  • Electronics
  • Communications
  • Related technical disciplines
• Practical commercial experience working with middleware architectures.
• Experience solving significant architecture, compatibility, stability or performance challenges.
• Ability to design and evolve complex system-level software platforms.
• Strong communication, coordination and stakeholder-management skills.
• Ability to drive architectural changes from concept through implementation.

Preferred Experience

• Experience designing middleware for mobile, desktop, embedded or multi-device operating systems.
• Strong understanding of framework services, IPC, runtime systems, lifecycle management and system services.
• Experience with memory optimisation, startup performance and system compatibility.
• Experience defining architecture governance, engineering standards or platform specifications.
• Familiarity with automated testing and quality systems for low-level platform software.
• Experience working across multiple engineering teams on large-scale operating system platforms.
• Ability to translate emerging technology trends into medium-term architecture strategy.
