Technical Director of Applications
2. Key Responsibilities
2.1 Engineering Leadership (Execution-Focused)
- Lead applications development and technical execution for software-driven automation projects (approx. 80% hands-on delivery)
- Manage a multidisciplinary engineering team (mechanical, electrical, and software) using Agile/SCRUM methodologies
- Drive standardisation and modularisation of machine design and software architecture
- Review and approve engineering concepts, layouts, and technical specifications
- Lead FMEA, design reviews, and risk mitigation activities
- Own lifecycle documentation from design through validation and handover
- Ensure successful delivery of automation systems, including software, controls, and commissioning
- Act as senior escalation point for complex technical issues
- Serve as primary technical interface with customers
2.2 Applications, Software & Controls (Core Focus)
- Lead technical evaluation of customer URS and system specifications
- Define system architectures across software and controls layers
- Actively develop PLC, HMI, and SCADA software on live projects
- Write, debug, and optimise control logic and machine software as a core responsibility
- Develop reusable code libraries, function blocks, and machine standards
- Remain directly involved in commissioning, debugging, and fault resolution during FAT and SAT
- Lead execution of software and controls projects from concept through deployment
- Provide technical input into proposals and quotations, with emphasis on software scope
2.3 Technical Development & Innovation
- Drive development of new machine platforms, software frameworks, and modular architectures
- Contribute to the company’s technical roadmap and long-term product strategy
- Continuously improve software standards, code quality, and system robustness
- Maintain a hands-on understanding of emerging automation and controls technologies
- Represent the company in technical recruitment, industry engagement, and academic collaboration
2.4 Industry Engagement & Market Development
- Represent MachineLab at industry exhibitions, trade shows, and technical events
- Engage with customers, partners, and suppliers to identify opportunities
- Provide technical input into product direction based on real-world application needs
- Support business development through strong technical credibility and delivery capability
3. Key Competencies
- Strong expertise in automation, controls, and industrial software engineering
- Proven hands-on experience in PLC, HMI, SCADA programming and commissioning
- Deep understanding of automated machinery and system integration
- Experience in GMP-regulated environments (pharma/medical device preferred)
- Ability to translate URS into structured, production-ready software solutions
- Strong debugging, fault-finding, and problem-solving capability
- High commercial awareness in engineering decision-making
4. Leadership & Behavioural Expectations
- Full ownership of technical and commercial project outcomes
- Strong commercial awareness, including cost, margin, and delivery impact
- Ability to balance performance, cost, and manufacturability
- Willingness to challenge over-engineering and promote practical solutions
- Proactive identification and mitigation of technical and delivery risks
- Clear, structured communication with senior leadership and customers
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, project-driven environment
- Leads by example as a hands-on software and controls engineer
- Mentors and develops engineering team members through direct technical involvement
5. Reporting Line
- Reports to: Managing Director
- Direct Reports: Automation & Commissioning Engineers
- Key Interfaces: Mechanical Design, Toolroom, Project Management
6. Success Criteria (First 12–18 Months)
- Consistent on-time, on-budget delivery with successful FAT and SAT outcomes
- Measurable improvements in software quality, reuse, and standardisation
- Strong technical credibility across internal teams and customers
- Improved consistency and robustness of control systems across projects
- High levels of customer satisfaction and repeat business
- Clear, demonstrable hands-on contribution to software development and commissioning
7. Senior Role Expectations & Progression
Performance will be measured by:
- Leadership across multiple concurrent automation projects
